The Rise of the Spoken Word

Ben Roberts

Too tired at night to read? Lonely on your commute?

With our smartphones and tablets, we are increasingly tuning in and tuning out.

Celebrities can read us stories, classic novels interpreted by Nicole Kidman, Samuel Jackson, Diane Keaton and Colin Firth to name a few, from the burgeoning industry of audio books.

Or how about something more topical when we tune into our favourite podcast listening to debates, interviews and opinions on our favourite subjects and hobbies.

Epictus always said we had two ears and one mouth so we could listen twice as much and now with our trusted headphones we are doing just that

. In the ‘always on’ world we inhabit, listening and learning has become a great way to relax and choose what we want to hear despite the surroundings we are in.

All within the touch of a button.

Switch off, put your worries to the side and listen to something interesting.

You never know what you might gain.
