The Awkward Silence

Ben Roberts

We have all been there when we are making small talk and then the pause happens which seems to last for an eternity.

Instead of being sucked into the black hole, frantically wondering if you could retract what you just said, the art of small talk is making conversation flow.

Whilst it may seem difficult, it’s best to employ a tactic widely used by salespeople called the FORD techinque.

It’s very simple, it covers four topics that people are usually happy to engage in.

Family, Occupation, Recreation, Dreams.

Asking questions about these helps for barriers to drop and relationships to form quicker.

While moments of awkwardness are bound to occur this should help ease the path of more fluid communication.

And the less talking you do, the less chance you have of putting your foot in it!
