Negotiation

Ben Roberts

Negotiation and helping get the result you are after.

Constantly we are in situations both professionally and personally where we have to negotiate.

Some people have a natural flair for it, and others are not so comfortable with it.

In order to get the results we are after, whether that is a pay-rise or the place to go for dinner, a negotiation is about several key things.

Firstly, we need to know where the person we are negotiating with is coming from. Put yourselves in their shoes and see their situation. It will help give you a wider perspective and know how to push the necessary buttons.

Another simple trick is to have them say No. While it is natural to think you want them to say Yes, and that’s what they assume too, start negotiating from the opposite direction and it can throw up them off and make them more open to talking to you.

Finally, as always in life, it’s about respect. If you genuinely respect who you are negotiating with and demonstrate that during negotiations, your counterpart shouldn’t show any ill-will and will hopefully want to help you.
