Despacito and how the shift in the music industry made this possible

Ben Roberts

Every year there's a song that grabs the world's attention, Blurred Lines, Crazy in Love, Umbrella.

Daddy Yankee has been a successful Puerto Rican musical artist for a long time, however this year he has cracked global success.

The song Despacito is inescapable, from taxis, malls and clubs.

It started gaining success through Spotify where people, now more experimental with their tastes started listening to it outside of Latin America as it crept up the top 100 lists. In fact, this week Daddy Yankee became the first Latino artist to top the Spotify list of global artists ousting Ed Sheeran.

Using Justin Bieber to help collaborate on a remix gave the song another injection boost and hitting his huge fan base the song now has over 2.5 billions views on YouTube.

Surprisingly Spanish is the second highest spoken language in the world with over 400 million using it as their mother tongue.

So technology has helped spread music further and quicker than ever before. So is this a one off or the beginning of a Latin invasion? And what was your favourite summer song?
