Bastille Day

Ben Roberts

The Hemingway Bar.

As today is Bastille Day it would be appropriate to talk about a French Institution.

One of the world's literary greats Ernest Hemingway famously claimed he liberated the bar in the Ritz Paris from the Nazi's in 1944. Although like all storytellers, the truth maybe slightly embellished.

"When I dream of an afterlife in heaven," Ernest Hemingway once wrote, "the action always takes place at the Ritz Paris." So it's fitting one of the world's most iconic bars is named after him.

Sometimes in life we need to press the pause the button and soak in the history of the past to help understand the future.

So if you are ever in Paris, I recommend a visit to the Hemingway bar and imagine what has happened there over the years. Just don't forget your wallet!

To all my French colleagues and friends, Happy Bastille day.

What's your favourite bar that holds stories or memories of the past?
