25 years, Billions sent

Ben Roberts

A quarter of century has passed since the phone moved beyond it’s original duty of making and receiving calls.

The first sms was sent with the short text of ‘Merry Christmas’ to a Vodafone Director who was at a company holiday party.

SMS kicked off the start of phones becoming more like computers and were enthusiastically embraced peaking in 2012 with over 151 billion text messages sent globally.

While that number has dropped significantly since then, our thumbs are still busy just preferring to use other apps to send messages instead.

And if the SMS does fade away over time like most technology tends to do, we can always thank it for the short form of language, like omg and lol and indirectly leading to the rise of the emoji.
